How to properly starch a collar and cuffs of a shirt?
Knowing how to starch a shirt, you can give an ordinary product an unusually solemn look. A few years ago, this approach to the processing of male and female shirts was used everywhere, and even in everyday life. Today, however, the direction is undeservedly ignored by many housewives.
Most often they explain this by the lack of free time, but, as practice shows, additional manipulations take only a few minutes. The rest simply do not understand the charm of the approach.
In addition to the festivities, starching shirts is considered beneficial from the practical side of the issue:
- If products intended for regular wear, constantly starch at home, you can expect to reduce the speed of their wear. The texture of the fibers is compacted, and they slowly become unusable.
- Processed things retain their neat appearance longer and do not crumple so quickly.
- In the process of starching, an additional layer forms on the surface of the fabric, which, after ironing, is compacted and provides additional whiteness to matter.
- The starch layer is also a protective barrier that prevents quick contamination of the garment. Under the influence of water, this film dissolves and allows you to wash matter without problems.
Tip: Few people know that you can starch a shirt only from natural fabric. Synthetics does not have that unique porous texture, which is able to pass the solution between the fibers and fix it there.
Despite the abundance of advantages, starching has one significant minus - after such processing, products cease to let air through. Therefore, constantly wearing starched shirts is not recommended.
Rules for the preparation of the composition and important nuances of the process
One of the most important stages of work is the preparation of the active composition, the degree of tissue fixation and the final appearance of the product will depend on its quality.
In this case, it is necessary to be based not only on the desired level of stiffness, but also on the quality of the material:
- Soft way. It is used to process chiffon and cambric. To do this, dissolve a teaspoon of starch in a small amount of water, then add a liter of boiling water to the mass and cook it on low heat for no more than three minutes. Ultimately, you should get a transparent and uniform product.
- Semi-rigid way. Ideal for cotton. It differs from the previous approach only in the amount of starch. We take it in the amount of a tablespoon.
- Hard way. It is used for starching cuffs and collars. First, rub two tablespoons of starch with cold water to a pulp state. Then dissolve a teaspoon of salt in a glass of boiling water and mix with starch slurry. Cook the resulting mass for a couple of minutes and insist for at least an hour.
After preparing the composition, we proceed to the processing of the washed product or its individual parts.
Manipulation technology and secrets from experienced hostesses
The starching procedure itself is quite simple, but to get the best result, it is worth considering several important points:
- If the product needs to be processed completely, then immerse it in the prepared composition for half an hour. Partial processing does not require prolonged soaking, we just thoroughly wet individual sections.
- Before starching the collar, it is recommended to wipe it with hydrogen peroxide. This will get rid of yellow stains and prevent their rapid appearance.
- After the right time, we take out the thing and hang it, carefully straightening all the folds and creases.
- We dry the garment in a natural way, spraying with water from the spray gun as it dries.
- When the shirt becomes only slightly wet, iron it, paying special attention to the cuffs and collar.
- It is not recommended to dry the starch-treated fabric on the balcony or battery, this can lead to overdrying of the material and the formation of strong creases.
- If the product needs to be given a solemn gloss, then a little salt or molten stearin should be added to the working composition.
- Today, you can starch shirts even in the washing machine. To do this, only need to fill the starch in the tray for the air conditioner. Other means are not used in the same cycle.
Such an economical procedure as starching shirts allows you to achieve an effect that even dry cleaning staff cannot guarantee. However, no negative effects on the tissue are observed.
