How can I remove the smell of second-hand clothing from my own?
Despite the mistrustful attitude of most people towards used products, this market has nevertheless formed its circle of adherents. But often they face the question of how to get rid of the smell of second-hand goods, so characteristic of most products. On the one hand, the presence of a persistent aroma indicates a high-quality disinfection of clothing items.
On the other hand, in trying to fix the problem, “new” things often suffer. Experienced proponents of the trend recommend that you first carry out intensive shopping cleaning in order to remove unpleasant notes, and then give them a pleasant smell using folk methods.
Second Hand Handling Approach
At home, pre-wash garments from second-hand need not in detergent, but in a solution of ammonia. It will allow not only to remove all traces of the industrial chemical smell, but also neutralizes the remnants of the poisons used in the disinfection process.
Manipulation is carried out according to the following scheme:
- We will need water and 10% ammonia (when using a product of a different concentration, you will have to adjust the proportions yourself). To process a small thing, you need to dilute no more than a tablespoon of the product in 5 liters of water. For larger products, it is allowed to add half a glass of ammonia to 10 liters of liquid.
- Soak the selected garment in the resulting solution and wait from an hour to six. If cotton and other thin natural fabrics are cleaned in about an hour, then fur, leather and synthetics should be kept to the maximum.
- Handled things in this way are slightly squeezed and hung out in the fresh air. When drying indoors, and even more so, using sources of artificial heat, it is not possible to completely remove the unpleasant odor. The duration of the stage is 1-2 days.
- Only after the described manipulations can the products be washed in the traditional way using folk flavors or conditioners.
Ammonia does not cause drying out, deformation or molting of matter, therefore this approach is absolutely safe for all garments.
Alternative methods of restoring the optimal state and smell of tissue
These funds are recommended to be used in the absence of strong severity of a specific smell or as the final stage of complex processing of things:
- Flavored salt and essential oils. They are added in the course of washing or are used at the subsequent soaking of objects. Liquid esters can even be added to the water tank in the iron, then the fabric will be saturated with aromatic vapors during ironing.
Tip: Often, second-hand stores themselves sell special deodorants for disinfected items. They give a pronounced positive effect and do not have a negative effect on the tissue.
- Even the most common soaking of products in a solution of salt or vinegar gives obvious shifts in the right direction. The effect will only intensify if both active components are added to the liquid and experimented with the concentration.
- The residual notes can be eliminated by steam ironing with a very powerful iron or with a steam cleaner.
- It is best to store processed second-hand purchases separately from other items in a specially prepared compartment. It should always contain some kind of natural flavoring. It can be ground coffee, a bar of fragrant soap, a bag of herbs, an empty perfume bottle.
- If initially the thing emanated a subtle smell of formaldehyde, then you can limit yourself to traditional washing with the spin turned off.It is better to hang such items in fresh air still wet, then the residual effects will quickly go away.
The above methods are characterized by increased efficiency and very rarely give failures, and they have absolutely no negative impact on the quality of the tissue. In an extreme case, in the absence of the desired result, you will have to turn to dry cleaning, specialists will quickly establish the cause of the problem and eliminate the unpleasant odor. True, in this case, the cost of processing things may exceed its value.
