Care for mother-in-law's tongue at home - how to transplant a flower?
According to most gardeners, caring for Sansevieria (the official name of the plant) is a pleasure. The only thing you need to know clearly is how to transplant mother-in-law's tongue at home so that it continues to delight its bright leaves. The manipulation itself is not so complicated, but implies the presence of certain features.
It should be carried out only if the roots of the plant filled the entire pot. Despite the unpretentiousness of the species, crowdedness and forced restrictions, not a single flower can stand it. To carry out the manipulation, you do not need to have special skills, you just need to strictly adhere to the basic technical recommendations.
The frequency of manipulation and the rules of soil preparation
How often to transplant a plant depends on its age. And here the standard rule applies - the older the instance, the less often it can be disturbed. The soil of a young flower is recommended to be renewed at least 1 time in 1-2 years. Adult mother-in-law's tongue needs a similar procedure once every 3-4 years. It is best to carry out manipulation in the spring, then the pet will have time to recover.
Tip: In cases where the plant is already mature and has reached impressive size, the transplant procedure can be replaced by a simpler approach. It is necessary to remove the topsoil from the existing pot and replace it with fresh. True, this approach is allowed only when using a wide capacity for the plant, sufficient to accommodate all of its roots.
In order to properly transplant sansivieria, special attention must be paid to the composition of the soil. According to most experts, it should be like this: 1 part humus and sand 2 parts turf soil. Sometimes sod is replaced with sheet soil and peat, taken in equal proportions.
Process Features
When choosing a new pot, it is necessary to take into account the fact that mother-in-law's roots are distributed in breadth, and not in depth. For this reason, you can consider only those tanks that have low sides, but a very wide bottom.
The process of transplanting the plant itself is as follows:
- First, mother-in-law's tongue must be carefully watered. If this is not done, damage to the root system can be provoked, and it is quite difficult to take an instance out of dry land.
- In the prepared container, lay out the drainage and a layer of new soil.
- Carefully remove the flower from the old pot. If necessary, you can slightly dig it up with something narrow, for example, a pencil.
- Before planting a plant in another pot, you need to carefully separate the old soil from the root system with your hands. If rotted roots are found, they can be cut and disinfected with slices. At home, it is recommended to use special products or crushed activated carbon for this.
- In the new container we place the mother-in-law's tongue strictly in the center, after which we sprinkle the rhizome with soil. All roots must be hidden.
- It is recommended to slightly trample and compact the soil, but do not press hard.
- After the process of flower transplantation is completed, it is recommended to place it in partial shade and refuse to water for several days. If the manipulation was carried out correctly, mother-in-law's tongue will not react to it in any way.
The transplanting period of the plant is the most suitable time for its propagation by dividing the rhizome. This approach is the most effective of amateur ones, you only need to act carefully so as not to damage the used parts of the root.
