How to glue drywall to a concrete or brick wall
Content:
Recently, drywall has increasingly been used to level walls. This finishing material perfectly retains heat, allows you to hide the irregularities of the processed surface, to hide the wiring. There are two ways to fix gypsum plasterboard sheets to the wall: on the crate and using adhesive. The second method allows you to significantly save precious centimeters of usable area, as well as the strength and time spent on repairs - you just need to know how and how to stick drywall to the wall.
How to make glue?
Among modern manufacturers of drywall adhesive, Knauf is the most popular company, which produces the Perlfix professional mix. In addition, Volma and Ivsil Plast make such adhesives. The products of each manufacturer have their advantages and disadvantages and vary in cost, expense, reliability and durability of the connection.
Knauf created a special Perlfix adhesive for gluing drywall to the wall. This adhesive consists of gypsum and various synthetic additives and is used for the installation of drywall panels or isothermal material on concrete and brick walls.
Important!
Apply Perlfix glue only when working indoors.
Glue enters the distribution network in 30 kg bags. Before buying, you should correctly calculate the required amount of adhesive, given that the material consumption is 5 kg per 1 sq. m surface.
In order for the glue to fully meet the specifications declared by the manufacturer, it is necessary to properly prepare the solution. To do this, you need a plastic bucket or tank and a construction mixer. Of course, you can prepare the mixture manually, but with the mixer the work will be done much faster and better. The dry mixture is diluted with water in a ratio of 1: 2, that is, take two parts of the powder and one part of water.
Water is poured into a clean plastic container, after which the adhesive mixture is poured. All is stirred until a homogeneous mass is obtained, lumps and clots are thoroughly ground.
Important!
To achieve a uniform consistency of the adhesive solution, it is necessary to add the dry mixture in small portions to the water. This will not only facilitate the mixing process, but also reduce the load on the mixer, which will reduce the risk of breakdown of the apparatus.
As a result of mixing, a thick liquid similar to sour cream should be obtained. If the glue seems too liquid or thick, you can add powder or water, bringing the mass to the desired density.
The finished solution should be used up within half an hour. Moreover, it must be borne in mind that before stirring a new portion of glue the container will have to be thoroughly washed, otherwise the setting time of the composition will be significantly reduced.
Wall surface preparation
Before gluing drywall to the wall, it is necessary to properly prepare the glued surface.
Important!
The temperature of the walls on which the GKL is to be glued should be at least + 5 ° C.
First of all, the surface of the base must be cleaned of dust, dirt and debris. If detachment of any fragments occurs, they must be carefully removed, and this place should be cleaned. Formwork grease must be removed from concrete slabs. To improve the adhesion of the surface of concrete and foam concrete should be treated with a primer "Concrete".
When gluing hygroscopic surfaces - brick, aerated concrete, plastered walls - it is recommended to first apply the Grundirmittel primer manufactured by Knauf. After applying the primer, it is necessary to postpone further work for a while and allow the treated surface to dry, and only then can drywall be glued to the wall.
Gluing drywall to a flat wall
This method of gluing drywall is applicable to relatively smooth concrete or brick walls when the height of the bumps does not exceed 5 mm.
Since the glue layer between the wall and the drywall sheet will be quite thin, it will not be possible to hide the wiring without strobing. Therefore, first of all, you need to make the appropriate marking and use a puncher or other tool to hollow out the recesses for the wires and make sockets for sockets. Now the wires can be laid in grooves and secured with clamps every half meter.
When the wiring is finished, the surface of the wall can be primed. If the concrete wall is painted, it is not necessary to peel off the paint. This long and laborious process will be avoided by a special primer for painted surfaces. Such a tool costs a little more than usual, but it saves time and energy. Once the soil is dry, you can proceed with the installation of gypsum plaster.
Experts advise starting gluing from one of the corners of the room, adjoining the gypsum panel close to the perpendicular wall. The next sheet is placed close to the first, and so bypass the entire room around the perimeter.
The process of gluing GCR includes the following steps.
- Drywall is laid out on a flat surface and the adhesive is distributed with a notched trowel in separate piles in the middle of the sheet and in the form of a continuous strip around the perimeter. If you plan to hang furniture at the location of this panel, it is necessary to cover the entire sheet with glue for greater reliability of fastening.
- GCR scraps are used as supports on which the sheet is mounted. Gypsum does not tolerate moisture, so the open edge of the gypsum board should not be in contact with the ceiling or screed, from which condensate can flow. It is impossible to replace temporary linings with stationary waterproofing supports, since the drywall adhesive contains gypsum, which hardens only with the participation of air. Therefore, GCR is installed on temporary substrates, which are removed at the end of the work, and the free space is filled with sealant.
Important!
The length of the drywall sheet should be less than the height of the walls by 1.5 cm.
- The sheet is pressed against the wall and aligned vertically, using the level and a rubber mallet. It will be much more convenient to work if, in advance, even in the process of preliminary hanging the walls, make markings on the floor and ceiling, otherwise without such markings you can glue the first sheet too deep.
- When all the panels are installed, the gaps between them are puttied and cleaned, after which you can proceed to the finishing of the walls.
Despite its fragility, gypsum plasterboard weighs about 30 kg. Therefore, it is better to carry out work on leveling the walls not alone, but with an assistant.
Gluing GKL to the wall with obvious irregularities
For gypsum plasterboard walls with obvious irregularities, the above method will not work, and you can not do with glue alone. If the height of the differences on the surface of the base is more than 2 cm, you need to make a structure like a crate, and already adhere sheets of finishing material to it.
One of the sheets of drywall is cut into strips 10 cm wide. The number of strips depends on the area of the surface to be treated. The strips are glued vertically to the wall, leaving a gap of about 50 cm between them. When creating this design, you must clearly maintain the vertical, controlling yourself using the rule and level.
In addition, the amount of glue applied must adjust the distance from the wall to the frame strip. In the place where the cavity is located, put more glue, and vice versa. If all the strips are located in the same plane, then the wall after gluing with drywall will be even. The bands play the role of beacons, and the GCR will be attached to the glue to the resulting frame.
With this alignment of the walls, enough space is left inside the frame to hide the wiring. Therefore, you won’t have to ditch the surface, you just need to stretch and secure the wires. After making sure that the glue is completely dry and the frame is firmly and reliably fixed to the wall, you can proceed to gluing drywall sheets. To do this, you can use the same Perlfix glue or liquid nails. In the latter case, the result will be the same, although the cost of the product is much higher.
Tip
Some specialists use adhesive foam for drywall as an adhesive. Beginners are better off not choosing this tool. Of course, if all the work is done correctly, the adhesion is very durable. However, working with foam is incredibly difficult. For an hour, until the foam hardens completely, it is necessary to constantly tighten the sheets to the lighthouses. Otherwise, the foam will creep out of the sheet and dry out in the form of knolls, which will then have to be cut off.
When decorating even walls made of concrete or brick, it is advisable to use sheets of drywall, which can be quickly and reliably attached to the surface with a special adhesive. This method will save time and useful space, since it does not require the construction of a metal frame - even if the walls in the room do not differ in particular evenness, you can do without it. It is only necessary to pre-stick vertical strips of drywall, which will serve as beacons.
