7 best ways to clean your fur collar
Content:
A brand new fur edge always looks elegant and noble, but time passes, and it loses its former attractive appearance. Then it is time to clean the fur collar. This can be done in different ways - depending on whether the fur on the collar or faux fur. And so that the product does not deteriorate, you need to remember the simple rules and use the step-by-step instructions.
2 ways to clean a natural fur collar
Many people know or intuitively guess that it is impossible to wash the fur edge neither in the washing machine, nor manually. They usually wash the down jacket and leave it without proper care. But cleaning fur is not only possible - it is necessary! After the procedure, it will again become fluffy and will not only look more neat, but also better keep warm.
To understand whether the fur on the collar needs to be cleaned, you need to direct a stream of cold air from the hairdryer onto it. If the villi freely fly apart and fall into place, you can safely carry it on.
Alcohol cleaning
An alcohol-based recipe helps get rid of oily deposits on the pile and dust and dirt settled on it. It also removes odors and gives the fur shine and volume.
To prepare the solution you will need:
- 200 ml of water;
- 100 ml of ethyl alcohol (can vodka);
- 2 tbsp. tablespoons of vinegar.
All components must be poured into a spray bottle and mixed thoroughly, shaking it from side to side for 3 minutes.
Step-by-step instructions for cleaning a fur collar with an alcohol solution:
- Unfasten the collar and lay it on the oilcloth.
- Sprinkle it from the spray with the prepared solution (1-2 clicks on the area from a height of 25-30 cm).
- Wipe the fur with a dry cotton cloth. Do not rush, try to process each villus.
- After cleaning, comb the fur with a wooden comb with blunt teeth and shake.
- Dry the fur edge on the balcony or the street - so the vinegar smell will go away faster.
If necessary, the procedure can be repeated several times. By the way, it also helps with the confusion of the pile or when the fur is taken in during transportation.
For a white natural edge, you can use a cleaning solution with the effect of light clarification. Prepare it from 300 ml of warm water, 2 tbsp. tablespoons of lemon juice, 1 tbsp. tablespoons of baking soda, 1 teaspoon of alcohol. The principle of application is the same.
Using shampoo
Shampoo for animals - cats or dogs - does a great job cleaning the fur collar. You can buy it at the pharmacy. Ordinary shampoo is also suitable for these purposes, but only simple, without the addition of oils and balm.
How to wash a natural fur collar with shampoo?
- Comfortably position the unfastened edge on a hard surface.
- Prepare a solution: in a glass of warm water, dissolve 1 teaspoon of shampoo.
- Sponge the pile with a sponge, taking care not to touch the skin and tissue.
- After 5 minutes, rub the fur in the direction of growth with a brush.
- Wash the shampoo with a sponge soaked in clean, warm water.
- With a dry waffle towel, dab the remaining moisture and hang the collar to dry.
After washing with shampoo, some housewives are advised to wipe the fur with conditioner to rinse their hair (1 teaspoon per glass of water). It gives shine and protects the pile from rapid contamination.
Faux Fur Collar Cleaning
Unnatural fur, although it costs much less, in whimsicality is not inferior to the fur of fox or silver fox. Therefore, it is cleaned in a gentle way. You can use the same recipes as for natural fur. The second option is to wash it similarly to woolen products.
Step-by-step instruction:
- Heat 3-4 liters of water to 30 degrees.
- Dissolve 2 tablespoons of hair shampoo or washing gel, and whisk the water into a foam.
- Lower the artificial edge and rub the pile with a soft brush.
- Rinse the collar thoroughly in water (3-4 times).
- Wrap the product with a terry towel and wring it out without twisting.
- Shake the fur vigorously and hang to dry in a warm, ventilated area.
- After drying, comb with a strong comb with blunt teeth and shake the edge again.
Faux fur has a fairly short service life - 3 years (against 15-25 years for natural). After this time, it does not make sense to clean or wash it. It is better to purchase a new edge to the down jacket.
What can not be done?
The fur in its structure resembles human hair. Inadequate care, as well as excessive care, negatively affects the appearance of the product.
It is unacceptable to perform the following actions with a furry edge:
- Soak, wash, drench liberally. The skin on which the fur (mezdra) rests, as well as the fabric basis of the artificial collar, do not tolerate moisture. From water, they become coarse, crack and poorly hold the pile.
- Dry with a hairdryer or on a battery, in direct sunlight. The fur should dry naturally in a well-ventilated area.
- To iron. Ironing the collar, even from the inside, will hopelessly ruin the product.
- Clean with aggressive chemicals with bleaches, phosphates, enzymes, chlorine. Most cleaning products destroy the structure of the pile, because they are designed to combat protein contamination (fat, sweat), and natural fur is about 75% keratin protein. In the case of artificial pile, the reason is different - he is inclined to accumulate chemistry and become “oak”.
Before you try a new recipe or tool for cleaning the edge, you should conduct a test in an inconspicuous place. For example, in the center of the collar from the inside. It is necessary to process the area of 1 square centimeter with the selected composition and see how the fur reacts to it.
Universal cleaning in damp sheets
In order to clean the fur on the collar, you will need an old cotton sheet, a knocker - and nothing more. The sheet is slightly moistened from the spray gun, then an unfastened edge is placed on it. Above is a sheet of sheet. With light pats, dirt and dust are knocked out of the fur, after which they are immediately absorbed into the moistened fabric. Expanding the sheet, we get a clean collar that can be immediately fastened to the down jacket and worn.
Dry cleaning of natural and artificial collar
Cleansing in this way is the most gentle. Moisture does not get wet on the mezdra or the fabric holding the pile, and the fur itself does not suffer from chemical agents. Pollution on the hairs is absorbed into loose natural substances, and then lightly swept away with a soft brush.
For a white fur collar apply:
- potato starch;
- talc;
- flour;
- semolina.
For dark fur take:
- rye bran;
- clean sand (pre-washed, dried and sieved);
- small sawdust of deciduous trees.
To increase efficiency, the selected substance is heated in a pan before use. Then it is rubbed into the collar with massage movements, and after 5-15 minutes it is removed. As a result, the fur looks refreshed and more fluffy.
How to bleach natural and artificial fur?
White collars look especially charming. They emphasize the beauty of the face, but get dirty very quickly. In addition, white fur tends to turn yellow over time if stored improperly.
You can try to whiten the pile folk remedies:
- Hydrogen peroxide. In order to restore the whiteness of the fur edge and get rid of an ugly yellow hue, you need to dilute a tablespoon of 5% hydrogen peroxide in a glass of water, add 5 drops of ammonia and mix everything. Then the foam sponge should be soaked in the solution and the yellowed areas should be treated. After 5-10 minutes, the shade will change, then the collar can be wiped with a clean cloth dry.
- Blue. The agent has long been used for coloring white products that have turned yellow over time. To do this, blue is dissolved in water to get a light blue tint (5-7 drops per 200 ml). The collar is irrigated from a spray gun or treated precisely with a sponge. The blue pigment “eats” the yellowness, and as a result, the fur becomes snow-white.
Peroxide recipes are suitable for natural all-white fur, and for silver fox fur, and for faux. But in the latter case, special changes should not be expected. Synthetic hair dyes much worse.
If yellowness does not go away from the fur edge, there is an alternative way to revive it - repaint it in dark color.
The fur on the collar will remain luxurious for a long time, if properly looked after. Gentle cleaning is carried out up to 2 times per season, usually in the middle of an active sock and at the end. If you have doubts about your abilities, you can take the edge to dry cleaning. But it should be borne in mind that natural fur can withstand no more than 6 procedures. At home, in the above ways, the collar cleans safely and more than effectively!
