What utensils can your dishwasher ruin?
Content:
Home appliances designed for washing dishes have long ceased to be a rarity in a modern apartment. She saves the time and energy of the hostess, freeing herself from everyday routine labor, washes dishes up to a shine and at the same time saves water. The manufacturer's instructions indicate which items cannot be washed in the dishwasher. This is very valuable information, and special attention should be paid to it. There are several materials, the dishes of which must be protected from prolonged exposure to hot water and detergent.
What happens inside the car during washing
In any kitchen, in addition to ordinary dishes and cutlery, there are a million different appliances that make cooking easier. Graters and shredders, meat grinders and strainers, cutting boards, knives, pans and pans require regular cleaning. To find out what can be put into the dishwasher from the extensive list, and what is better to wash by hand, it is necessary to imagine what kind of environment is created inside the machine during washing.
In a working appliance, the following factors act on dishes:
- very hot water (+ 75 ° C);
- aggressive chemicals;
- long stay in water;
- drying with hot air.
Not every material can withstand such extreme conditions. If you put in the machine those items that are contraindicated in automatic cleaning, you can not only lose your favorite dishes, but also break down expensive equipment.
Many manufacturers of dishes put on their products a special icon that allows or prohibits washing in the dishwasher. However, not everyone does this. In addition, in any home there are old cutlery on which there are clearly no signs. Therefore, before loading the washing machine, the hostess must know exactly which item to entrust to the machine and what to wash by hand.
Why aluminum dishes cannot be washed in a car
Aluminum utensils - the first in the list of items that are strictly forbidden to wash in the machine. The fact is that this metal, with prolonged exposure to hot water, begins to intensively release ions. As a result, during the washing cycle, the internal surfaces of the unit and the rest of the dishes are covered with a dark coating, and this is not so bad. The main danger is that plaque particles clog small holes in the sprinklers, and it is almost impossible to clean them from there.
Aluminum does not always darken immediately at the first wash. It happens that the product withstands 2-3 cycles without changes, but then it still darkens and spoils both the machine and the rest of the utensils.
Scientists have found that food cooked in aluminum utensils can be harmful to human health. It is better to completely abandon the spoons, ladles and pans of this material or use them only in rare cases. Such utensils can only be washed manually with not too hot water and without chemicals.
Wooden items can only be washed by hand.
Even a child knows that a wooden object that has been in the water for a long time swells and falls apart. Cutting boards, pestles, wooden bowls are best kept away from the dishwasher, where for two hours they will be rinsed in hot water with detergents.
What happens to wood products when washing in PMM?
- From prolonged exposure to liquids, wood fibers are impregnated with moisture and increase in size, as a result of which the product itself also changes its dimensions.
- After washing, the items are dried in hot air. The opposite process occurs: the tree dries quickly, the bond between the fibers breaks, cracks appear in the product or it completely breaks into pieces.
On sale, cutting boards glued from individual pieces of wood began to meet more and more. Such a product, after cleaning in a typewriter, will certainly fall into pieces, and even stain the rest of the dishes with glue. Wooden utensils should be washed by hand.
Plastic dishes
Plastic dishes can only be washed in a dishwasher if the items are made of special heat-resistant material. On such products there is a mark allowing automatic cleaning.
Reusable containers, boards, silicone molds can be washed in PMM, the main thing is to place them upside down.
The following plastic items must not be washed in a dishwasher:
- disposable tableware;
- plastic appliances without special marks;
- chemical products emitting a chemical odor;
- products with stickers.
Regardless of what material the dishes are made of, a paper sticker is a reason to refuse machine cleaning. This decoration will surely get wet and peel off, and pieces of paper will stick to the plates next to it, or they may clog the filter.
Hand tools should be washed
Sharp kitchen knives made of stainless steel should be washed with your hands under a stream of cool water. From hot water and steam, the knife blade becomes dull quickly.
For the same reason, do not wash knives and other parts of the meat grinder in the PMM. The cutting edges will blunt faster, and the material from which the product is made will oxidize due to detergent and hot water.
Do not put iron objects with small holes in the machine:
- garlic crush,
- tea strainer
- grater.
These products have many recesses and nicks, from which crumbs and pieces of food cannot be washed with automatic spraying anyway. Metal objects may scratch the walls of the dishwasher. It is better to wash such things by hand with a stiff brush.
What else is forbidden to wash in the dishwasher
In addition to dishes made of aluminum, wood and plastic, there are many more items that are either not recommended for washing in a dishwasher, or are allowed, but only subject to certain restrictions.
- Cast iron. Cast iron pans and pots should only be washed by hand. During cooking, the porous surface of the product is covered with a thin film of fat, which prevents the metal from rusting. When cleaning in a typewriter, this film dissolves, which is impossible to achieve with manual processing, and rusty spots appear on the products. Two or three sinks in the PMM - and the cast iron can be discarded. The same can be said for Teflon-coated pans.
- Crystal. From exposure to hot water, crystal glasses and vases are covered with small cracks and may crumble. It is possible to wash crystal in a machine only if the package has a permit badge. Moreover, the water temperature should not exceed + 50 ° C.
- China. Do not put dishes made of fine porcelain in the dishwasher, especially with gilding or other decorative elements. After two or three sinks, the products will fade, gilding will fly around, cups and saucers may crack due to high temperature.
- Copper, silver. These metals are not afraid of hot water, but do not tolerate contact with chemical detergents. The dishes darken and become covered with unsightly plaque.
- Thermoses. To maintain heat inside the thermos between the bulb and the housing, a heat insulator is located or a vacuum layer is provided. If it is placed in the dishwasher, the water that gets inside the product will dry for a very long time, resulting in a musty smell.
- Vacuum Lid Containers, including thermo mugs, it is forbidden to wash in the dishwasher. From high temperature, the plastic is deformed, the containers are not tightly closed, the dishes lose their properties.
It is difficult to overestimate the help that a dishwasher renders to a housewife in the kitchen. The main thing is to adhere to certain rules for using the device and not try to wash those products whose cleaning can lead to damage to the unit.
