Choosing a good plumbing for a toilet can be difficult due to the abundance of the presented models. In order not to be mistaken and to understand which toilet bowl flushes better, you need to consider what characteristics affect this. One of the main factors, of course, is the location and mechanism of the drain tank (fittings), but in addition to this, the following parameters affect the quality of the drain:
- type of toilet outlet;
- bowl shape;
- the presence of the anti-splash system.
To choose a toilet bowl that does its job well, you need to consider its device in detail.
How does the drain work?
The flush toilet, which replaced the pot, was itself a miracle of technology of the time. Then the minimum requirements were imposed on him - to wash off waste products. Now the situation is different: the buyer wants to choose a model that does not just wash, but rinses well, at a time. Modern industry provides such an opportunity, although the design of the drain mechanism over the past 130 years has not changed much.
Through a special hose, water enters the drain tank, which is equipped with a shut-off valve system. The filling system allows you to fill the tank to a certain level, after which the valve shuts off the water supply. When the button is pressed, the drain valve starts to work: the valve opens, and water rushes under pressure to the toilet bowl. As the water level has decreased, the filling system is triggered again. Thus, the successive actuation of two systems of stop valves provides a comfortable use of the toilet.
Features of the design and mechanism of the drain tank
The filling / draining mechanism is inside the tank, only the control system is brought up. The classic design is as follows.
- The water inlet hose is attached to the side wall, within 10 cm from the top edge.
- The valve regulates the water filling, on the second side of which there is a float. It rises with water until the valve closes the filler opening.
- The siphon closes the drain located at the bottom of the tank.
- The control button is connected to the siphon, when it is pressed, the siphon moves and the flow of water rushes into the toilet bowl.
- An overflow protection system is also attached to the siphon.
In modern models, the water inlet hose can be connected from below, not far from the drain hole. In this case, the shutoff valve is connected to the float by a vertical stem. With this design, the noise level is lower during water intake.

The level of water collected can be adjusted. For this, an adjustment screw is provided on the float.
In old toilets, the stop valves for filling and draining worked independently of each other. Modern models of the middle and high price segment are equipped with a mechanism with a combined configuration. In it, all elements are interdependent.
Trigger mechanism
The trigger mechanism of the drain tank is of two types - with automatic and mechanical mode. The difference between them is management.
- In automatic mode, just press the button once, and the set amount of water is drained into the toilet.
- The mechanical mode provides the flow of water only as long as the user presses the button. As soon as the button is released, the drain is blocked.
The tank fittings can be controlled by a button located on top or side, as well as a chain.The chain is always on the side of the tank.
How does the location of the tank affect the drain?
Tanks also vary in installation method. You can choose from the following options:
- compact tank mounted on the toilet;
- built into the wall;
- hinged - is attached to the wall just above the toilet;
- the tank is located high above the toilet (almost under the ceiling), connecting to it with a pipe.
The latter view - when the tank is attached to the wall much higher than the toilet bowl - provides the largest water pressure when flushing, since the greatest gravitational force acts here. This arrangement was traditional three decades ago. Now they choose it if the room is decorated in retro style. Apart from the design, there is one more peculiarity in this arrangement: going down under pressure, water “notifies” the whole apartment about it.
How much water is in the tank?
From 6 to 9 liters of water can be placed in the tank - depending on the model. There are tanks with a water saving system. They have two discharge modes: 6 liters and half - 3 liters. In such tanks there are two control buttons on top. Regardless of the type of tank, the amount of water collected can be adjusted using the screw on the float.
Choose a bowl shaped bowl
You can choose a toilet bowl in the shape of a bowl from several options:
- with a shelf;
- funnel-shaped;
- with a bias (visor).
A toilet bowl with a shelf is, like a cistern located under the ceiling, a retro option. It is the most unhygienic of all types of bowls: it is problematic to wash away waste from the first time with this form. In addition, this design of the toilet is characterized by the presence of splashes and splashes during the discharge of water.
To make everything well, rinse off without splashing, it is better to choose a funnel-shaped bowl or a bowl with a slope. Both that and other option will provide good rinse off. In this case, you need to pay attention to one more nuance - the “anti-splash” function, which ensures the absence of splashes from the ingestion of waste products. It is implemented in many models. This effect is achieved by the location and shape of the drain neck.
In anti-splash models, the neck is lower and the drain hole is narrower in it. In addition, the water level in the neck should also be lower. In the technical documentation it is indicated. If it is stated that the toilet has an anti-splash function, the height of the water in the neck should not be more than 7 cm.
Toilet flush system
The efficiency of flushing depends to a large extent on how the water supply openings are located in the toilet bowl. Now there are two varieties - direct and circular (reverse). With a direct flush, water flows down the back of the bowl into the neck. If something is not in the flow path, then this will have to be cleaned with a brush.
With a circular system, water will not enter the toilet from one, but from three holes located in different places under the rim of the bowl. A stream of water evenly washes the inner surface of the toilet, forming a funnel in the neck. This design is considered the most hygienic and practical.
What is the toilet made of?
The most common material for a toilet bowl is ceramic (faience) and porcelain. Ceramics are a porous material. So that the surface does not absorb water, ceramic toilets are coated with glaze. Porcelain is more resistant to not only water, but also chemicals. Unfortunately, these qualities are offset by the high cost of porcelain toilets; therefore, ceramic models are presented in the low and middle price segment.
As long as the glaze - the top layer of ceramics - is not damaged, this does not have any effect on the flush. If metal brushes and aggressive chemicals are used for cleaning, the glaze is easily damaged. In this case, the surface will become rough and the waste will be delayed, not washed off completely.
Now on the market you can find plastic toilets covered with a layer of fiberglass, as well as stainless steel models.They did not get much distribution, so it’s hard to say about their practical properties.
What to choose?
To choose plumbing in a toilet with suitable characteristics, you must first determine what is most important for the owners of the apartment. For example, if the main parameter is a good flush, and the noise is not an obstacle, then a retro-style tank will be the best option. If, on the contrary, noiselessness is one of the important characteristics, it is worth giving preference to a tank into which water is drawn from below. So that while he washes off well, you need to choose a bowl with a circular flush.
