Is it possible to wash a cuff from a tonometer in water?
When using devices for measuring blood pressure, sooner or later, the question of sanitation arises. Is it possible to wash the cuff of the tonometer? Not. Regardless of the manufacturer, the cuff can not be washed, wet, treated with a hot iron. But at the same time cleaning with disinfectants is allowed.
Why not?
The cuff is made of 100% nylon and contains 1 or 2 tubes. The material is characterized by high strength, wear resistance, does not absorb odors, sweat and other impurities. You can wash the nylon by itself. However, the cuff is part of the measuring device, inside of which is the air chamber. And for a pressure meter, the accuracy of the readings is of paramount importance. Washing the cuff from the tonometer can lead to a change in its size, which will affect the results of blood pressure measurements.
If the cuff is unknowingly washed, you should check the accuracy of the device. For this, the tonometer must be taken to a service center in accordance with the trademark (Omron, Microlife, B.Well). Addresses of branches should be indicated in the warranty card. You can also find the location of the service center at the place of purchase. Even without washing, the tonometer should be checked every 5 years!
Cleaning rules
If it is impossible to erase the cuff from the tonometer, then how to clean it? Sanitization with a 70% solution of ethyl alcohol or a 3% solution of hydrogen peroxide is allowed:
- A cotton pad is abundantly moistened with a disinfectant and wiped with a cloth.
- After 15 minutes, re-processing is carried out.
Disinfection rules to be observed:
- Clean the appliance after each use. Disinfection is subject to the inner part of the fabric coating, which is in contact with the forearm.
- With a solution of ethyl alcohol, you can wipe other parts of the device: tubes, pressure gauge, rubber bulb, stethoscope.
When using a hydrogen peroxide solution, partial discoloration of the fabric coating is allowed.
To extend the life of the tonometer, it is important to store it properly. Storage at temperatures from -33 to +55 degrees and air humidity not more than 85% is allowed. The tubes and chamber must be protected from piercing and cutting elements.
If the cuff is worn, it can be replaced as a part of the device. To do this, contact a specialized store of medical equipment. It is selected in accordance with the device company (Omron for Omron, Microlife for Microlife), costs about 800–900 rubles.
So, is it possible to wash the cuff from the tonometer? Definitely not. Washing and getting wet the pressure gauge can affect the accuracy of the readings. The inner surface should be treated with medical alcohol or peroxide. This is more than enough. The fabric from which the cuffs are made repels moisture and is virtually contaminated.
