Removing dried water-dispersion paint from various surfaces
Content:
Water-based paint material is especially often used for interior decoration work. When painting the ceiling or wallpaper, few people manage to avoid accidental smudges or stains on the floor and furniture, so every home master needs to have in stock methods and tools that allow you to quickly wash water-based emulsion or water-dispersion paint from any surface.
Water-based paint is a type of water-dispersible composition. Its peculiarity is that it is easy enough to wash it with ordinary water, which cannot be said about some other paints formed by dispersion. How easy it will be to clean the stains depends on the exact composition of the paint material.
Advantages of emulsion formulations
Aqueous emulsion ink is an emulsion of water, a dye and polymers acting as stabilizers of the mixture. Particles do not dissolve in water, as in a classical solution, but are in suspension.
Water emulsion and water dispersion paints are similar in that their main component is water. These finishing materials have the same scope and similar properties.
The emulsion composition has the following advantages:
- the mixture is absolutely harmless to human health;
- dries completely in 2-3 hours;
- there is no sharp specific smell;
- You can get the desired shade by adding pigment;
- easy to apply to the surface;
- Tools are washed with plain water.
Of the disadvantages of this paint material, it is worth noting the limited scope. It is suitable only for indoor use, as it may dissolve under the influence of rain or snow.
However, it is precisely this drawback that can be considered a virtue when a bucket of water emulsion is accidentally capsized on a new linoleum or parquet. After all, it is not difficult to wash off water-based paint, especially if the stain has appeared recently.
Spatula stain removal
The dried water-based paint can be cleaned with any metal scraper or construction spatula. The method is suitable for removing paint material from hard surfaces that are difficult to damage with an iron object. So you can remove stains from concrete and brick walls or completely remove the old layer, if you plan, for example, to paste wallpaper on the walls.
Cleaning is carried out in several stages.
- If you need to remove paint from the entire surface of the ceiling or wallpaper, the floor and furniture are covered with plastic wrap or paper.
- Old paint is abundantly moistened with warm water. To do this, you can use a roller, sponge or washcloth.
- Wait 20-30 minutes until the layer is completely saturated with water and swells well.
- Carefully remove particles of paint material with a spatula.
If it was not possible to clean the paint completely, you must once again wet the surface and repeat the procedure.
How to remove stains with soapy water
Withered stains left on wooden or plastic furniture and linoleum can be wiped off using a standard soap solution, for the preparation of which washing powder, dishwashing gel or laundry soap is suitable. This cleaning method assumes that the contaminated surface will be wetted abundantly with water, so it is not suitable for paper, cardboard and drywall.
Stains and smudges from the paint are abundantly moistened with soapy water and left to soak for 30-40 minutes, after which the blots are removed with the hard side of the sponge, the place of contamination is washed with clean water and wiped dry.
Soap solution is used to remove paint from parquet and laminate. The main thing in this case is not to soak the stains for a long time, but to limit yourself to just a couple of minutes and immediately wipe the floor with a dry rag.
Solvent Cleaning
A fresh stain is much easier to remove than an old one. If the coloring pigment has leaked deep into the fibers, the solvent will help remove it.
As a cleaning agent, you can take:
- acetone,
- White Spirit,
- formic acid
- nail polish remover and other similar products.
It is only necessary to treat the stain with a sponge soaked in a solvent, and then wash the surface with clean water.
Chemical solvents can only be used on surfaces that are resistant to aggressive substances.
Using solvents, you can remove water-based paint from ceramic tiles, plastic, concrete, glass, wood, metal.
Industrial facilities
Manufacturers of finishing materials took care not only about how to paint the surface, but also about means for removing the coloring matter. In household chemical stores, you can purchase special cleaning products and clean the floor or furniture stained with water-based paint.
According to customer reviews, the most popular means are:
- Manor (Russia);
- Set Boya Sokucu (Turkey);
- DOCKER S4 and S5 (Germany).
Before using these tools, you must familiarize yourself with the manufacturer's instructions. Although the method is essentially the same for everyone: apply the product on a contaminated surface, wait 10-15 minutes, then rinse with clean water and wipe it dry with a cotton cloth.
Such washes can be used for concrete, metal and wood substrates. Since industrial products have a gel-like structure, they are much easier to apply to a wall or ceiling than a soap solution.
Grinder application
If a thick layer of old dried paint cannot be removed with either soapy water or industrial washing, you will have to remove it mechanically. To do this, you need a grinding machine or a conventional drill with a nozzle for removing paint.
All work with the grinding machine must be carried out in a respirator.
The cleaning method is suitable for wooden, brick and concrete surfaces. The entire area of the floor, wall or ceiling is divided into small squares and one by one the selected zones are treated. After the paint has been removed, it is necessary to ventilate the room, vacuum the furniture, if it remained in the apartment, and do a wet cleaning.
How to remove paint from different surfaces
The choice of means and method of cleaning surfaces from water-based paint directly depends on the composition of the material on which the colorful stains appeared.
- Linoleum. If the paint has just been poured onto linoleum, it must be quickly collected with paper or an old rag, and then the floor should be cleaned with any detergent. To remove stains that have become stuck in the thickness of the material, solvents will have to be used: gasoline, kerosene, turpentine.
- Parquet and other wood coverings. For cleaning parquet, laminate, wooden furniture, it is better to use professional paint removers. If you need to remove the old layer from the floor, you can use a grinder.
- Ceramic tile. The stain is soaked in soapy water, removed with a sponge and rinsed with clean water.
- Plastic. Paint stains remaining on plastic pipes after repair can be washed with any detergent. If the stain has not left the first time, the dirty part of the pipe is wrapped with a wet rag and left for 40 minutes.
- Glass. From a smooth glass surface, dried paint can be removed with a knife blade or iron sponge.
- Acrylic Wallpaper. First, the area of pollution is treated with a soap composition, trying not to wet the wallpaper through. If the paint has not come off, you must wait until the stain dries and scrape it off with a blunt knife.
It is better to test any product first in an inconspicuous place, having processed a small piece of the surface, and only after that proceed to general cleaning.
Some useful tips
Despite the fact that the removal of water-based paint does not seem to be too difficult, after listening to the advice of professionals on this issue, it is possible to carry out work to remove stains much faster and easier.
- When removing the old layer from the ceiling or walls with the help of a solution, it is necessary to process a small area and only after its complete cleaning proceed to the next one. Otherwise, the paint will swell at first, and then it will dry and become even more fixed on the surface.
- If some furniture remains in the repaired room, then it is better to cover it with film or paper - then you do not have to wash it.
- It is better to wipe off fresh, just formed paint stains than old dirt.
- Hair stained with water-based paint should be washed immediately with hot water and shampoo, without delaying this procedure until later.
Water-based paint is easy to remove from any surface, whether it be fabric, wood or paper. The main thing is to prevent the stain from drying out and take advantage of the advice of specialists when cleaning this simple pollution.
