Before Easter, believers traditionally begin preparing a festive table, the central decoration of which is painted eggs. It is customary to give colorful and multi-colored, with bizarre patterns, "marble" and stickers with paint to friends and relatives. Ignoring the store's assortment of food colors, which are often hazardous to health or cause allergies, most housewives prefer to use natural ingredients for coloring eggs. Beautiful, bright and varied shades, which, moreover, are completely harmless to children and adults, may well come from the proper use of the most common beets or turmeric. Painting eggs for Easter with your own hands without dyes is a simple task, but it can start an exciting creative process.
Cooking Easter Eggs
Natural dyes are herbal products that contain pigments that can “share” their color with egg shells. So, for natural coloring use, for example, peeling onions, red beets, carrots, paprika and turmeric, decoctions and infusions of berries and herbs.
Mostly the painting procedure takes place simultaneously with the cooking of the coloring component and the eggs. However, ready-to-eat eggs can be soaked in prepared colored solution - usually from half an hour to a day.
Rules for working at home
When working with any natural dye, it is important to follow a number of simple rules. One of them - predominantly white eggs should be used. Only in this case is it likely to get a rich, beautiful and undistorted color.
The second rule - it is important to prepare the eggs well before painting. Despite the fact that the technologies may differ (in one case, it is necessary to place already cooked eggs in the coloring liquid, in the other, cook in it), at the very beginning, each egg should be washed and degreased. To do this, simply wipe the shell with a cotton pad dipped in vinegar or alcohol.
We control both before and after
Before cooking, the eggs must be correctly processed, leaving them for several hours on the kitchen table or heating them in warm water. Adapted to ambient temperature, they most likely do not crack during heat treatment, which means that the pigment does not leak inside. The water where the eggs will be boiled should be salted. We expect: for each liter of water 1–1.5 tablespoons of salt will go.
It is not recommended to rub the already painted testicles with a towel - they should be washed with running water at room temperature, and then gently get wet with napkins. After all, to give the eggs a shine, you can rub the shell with vegetable oil and polish with a dry cloth.
Natural dyes for eggs
Almost any color can be given to the shell using the pigments that nature itself gave us. Some components are always in any kitchen, others may be an unexpected solution.
Pink and red - we paint eggs with beets
It is well known that the chicken egg turned red when Jesus was reborn, therefore this color is the main one on the Easter table. You can get this shade if you use fresh beets. It should be grated or chopped with a blender and pour a small amount of water. Next, add 1 teaspoon of vinegar to the resulting liquid and cook for 15 minutes. Hard-boiled eggs must be placed in a cup with beet juice. After 2-3 hours, the eggs will turn pink, and if you hold the egg in such a solution the whole night, the shell will become burgundy. Another option is to cook beetroot juice with eggs or grate the egg with juice.
If you cook the eggs in cranberry juice, the puppies will acquire a saturated pink color.
Pink-burgundy, pink-purple, lilac-colored shells can give decoctions of berries such as blueberries, currants, elderberries or raspberries. It would be nice to hold eggs in such liquids all night long.
Red-brown - the leader in popularity
One of the most topical natural pigments used at home is onion peel. We used to see such eggs at Easter - they are of a pleasant red-brown color, the saturation of which, by the way, is determined by the number of cleanings.
Rinse the onion husk, pour boiling water and cook for about 30 minutes. Then you should add salt and send the eggs to the onion broth. It’s better to cook the butter for at least 10-20 minutes.
Yellow and Orange - Turmeric
If you want to get the original yellow color of the shell, the eggs are painted with turmeric. To do this, add spices at the rate of 2–4 tablespoons per 1 liter of water to a deep saucepan. The more turmeric, the shade will be deeper and richer. Boil. Boiled eggs should be held in a saucepan with seasoning for 30 minutes. The color will be deeper and juicier if you add grated fresh carrots to the composition.
Another seasoning - paprika - can wonderfully prove itself as an orange natural dye for eggs. For 3 glasses of water you need to take about 10 tablespoons of paprika. Cook the finished solution for 30 minutes, then place the finished boiled eggs in it for 30 minutes.
The yellow color of the shell also gives a decoction of birch leaves, which will arrive in time for Easter celebrations this spring, and also - the zest of lemon or orange, the juice of carrots and walnut shells. In these solutions, eggs should be cooked until cooked.
Lavender - use grapes
Hard boiled eggs. Then cooled eggs must be sent for painting in the juice of red grapes. The output will be a delicate lilac shell color.
Beige and Brown - Tea or Coffee
A light brown color can be obtained by boiling dye in instant coffee or strong tea brewing. Resistance to shade can add vinegar. After staining the eggs, it is recommended to leave the broth in the refrigerator for the whole night, in which case the color will become even deeper and more categorical.
Stained with diamond greens, spinach and nettles
Very unusual and spectacular eggs are obtained if you paint them in green, which is traditionally present in every home. To do this, in a small amount of water sufficient to immerse the egg, one or more vials of brilliant green should be dissolved - depending on the desired result. In the resulting liquid you need to lower the egg and leave for 30 minutes. Zelenka is a completely safe pharmacy product.
Spinach juice can also give green color to eggs. To do this, fresh herbs (approximately 150 grams) should be chopped, squeezed juice, add half a liter of cold water and immerse eggs in this liquid. Bring to a boil and cook for 10-15 minutes.
An interesting green color for the eggs will provide nettles. In this case, even dried herbs, which are sold in the nearest pharmacy, are suitable. This staining method is completely harmless and environmentally friendly. Dry or fresh nettle leaves should be sent to a pot of water and cook for 20 minutes. Cool and strain the liquid. Dip the eggs in a container and boil for about 15 minutes. Krashenki will get an olive shade.
We paint in blue
To obtain a blue shell, you can use red cabbage. Head the cabbage finely chopped, pour the cabbage with half a liter of cold water, add 6 tablespoons of 9% table vinegar. Place eggs in the solution for 12-16 hours. As a result, they will turn into an interesting blue color.
About the same shade, but a little paler - closer to sky blue - gives the eggs strong hibiscus tea. Tea leaves should be brewed, getting a concentrated dark drink. And then put the boiled eggs in it. Be prepared for the fact that small pimples can appear on the shell, since the liquid has a pronounced acidity.
Decorate eggs with unusual patterns and ornaments.
- To get speckles on an egg, you need to moisten it with water, roll it in rice or millet, wrap it in a nylon bag (you can use old tights) and in this form put it in a coloring solution. Speckles are printed on the shell.
- You can stick any stencil from an improvised adhesive tape on the shell - it will protect this area from staining. This way you get eggs with drawings.
- For each egg, you can put on several stationery gum in random order. After staining, the testicle will be dotted with chaotic stripes.
- A pattern in the form of leaves and flowers can be obtained using traditional greens. A natural stencil is applied to the surface of the egg, fixed with a piece of kapron and the resulting "bag" is lowered into the coloring solution.
- Eggs with a lace pattern look original: openwork patches should be fixed on the egg and painted with the above method. Instead of lace on an egg, you can wrap a bandage, twine or net - you get chaotic or even stripes.
Useful Tips
- To make the color even, eggs should be selected without roughness.
- It is better to paint with gloves - then the eggs will be protected from handprints, and the hands from unnecessary staining.
- To enhance color saturation, it is best to refrigerate the solution overnight.
Of course, the use of natural dyes in most cases deprives us of the opportunity to get juicy and bright shades that are guaranteed to give chemical additives, but they are absolutely safe for health, so such dyes are not only a souvenir, but also a full festive dish. By tradition, they paint eggs on Pure Thursday, and it is the colored egg that is the amulet and the best gift for Easter to close friends and relatives.
