If desired, this can be done independently, over many years many methods have been formed that will help to check a diamond at home. Such approaches do not guarantee an accurate result, but allow us to determine what kind of stone in the frame is a high-quality processed diamond, ordinary quartz, cheap zircon or glass.

A few professional stone authentication guidelines

The easiest way to evaluate a diamond without a rim, for this you do not even need special tools. To check a diamond, the quality of which was called into question, it is enough for a professional to inspect a specimen:

1. We take a stone and bring it to a source of bright light. While glass reflects the rays of the entire surface, the diamond seems to let the beam through. In this case, the light is either collected in the form of a small dot, or evenly distributed around the perimeter, highlighting the edges.
2. A diamond can distort the rays passing through it, and this property can be used to establish the authenticity of the product. We take a sheet of paper with printed text, put it on a perfectly flat surface and put a diamond on top. If letters through it are read without problems, then this glass has nothing to do with precious stones. Some glasses also enlarge the image, but this is also not an indicator of quality.
3. If possible, it is recommended to compare the quality of the faces of the test product with real stone and ordinary glass. You need to take a magnifier and determine the texture of which of the test products looks like a prototype. Quartz is characterized by perfect smoothness of the surface, cleanliness and sharpness of faces. If the borders are blurred and covered with small scratches - this is glass.

Simple folk diamond testing methods

There are several dozens of options for checking diamonds for authenticity - from logical and quite effective to the most incredible. At home, you can limit yourself to the following:

• We lower the stone into the water. An ideal product will become invisible, but if there are scratches on it, they can be seen even if the item is genuine. But this technique allows you to check the stone for collectivity. This is when one product consists of genuine and fake parts, which is often used to increase its weight and volume.

• We take a prototype and scratch its surface with corundum. A true diamond will not react in any way to such an impact and will not be covered even by the smallest traces.
• Contrary to popular belief, a diamond does not shimmer with all the colors of the rainbow and does not shine with all its facets. A pure product shimmers with different shades of gray. True, in some cases, it is not the authenticity of the product that is called into question, but its quality.
• By analogy with corundum, the use of sandpaper is allowed. With its help, we are trying to scratch the surface of the stone. It is important not to confuse the tool and not to take a professional sandpaper, which will also erase a real diamond.
• The easiest way to breathe on a stone. This jewel does not fog up unlike glass. The method is convenient because with its help the quality of the product can be checked not only at home, but also in the jewelry store.

Tip: A diamond is really characterized by increased strength and resistance to external influences, but it is strictly forbidden to verify its authenticity with a hammer. From such a severe impact, even the most durable and cleanest diamond will crack.

• Another safe and fast method. Lubricate the stone with vegetable oil and apply to the glass. A true diamond absorbs grease and easily sticks to the surface.
• The authenticity of the product will help to install an ultraviolet lamp. Under its beam, a real stone will turn bright blue and will sparkle much stronger than under the sun. The fake will begin to cast a yellow-green light, reflecting only a few reflections.
• On a good stone, dusting from the metal of which its frame is made cannot be present. For this reason, diamonds are often removed from their places, conducting a general assessment of the products.

Applying the above methods, it is worth remembering that today artificially grown diamonds are actively used. But they repeat the texture of the original with such precision that even experienced jewelers can’t always determine where the stone is from the ground and where is the professional “fake”.
